How do I protect my baby safely from the sun in the pram?

How do I protect my baby safely from the sun in the pram?

Is it safe to cover my baby’s pram?

We get this question a lot — and it’s no surprise. Every summer, viral scare stories start circulating online, warning parents not to cover their prams for fear of overheating. While the concern comes from a good place, it often leads to confusion and unnecessary fear.

If you’ve ever worried about whether using a pram shade is safe, you're not alone. That’s why we’ve put together this clear, science-backed guide to help you understand what’s really going on — and why SnoozeShade is a safe and smart solution.

👀 Curious where this all started? Read our original post: Don't Be Alarmed by the Swedish Pram Scare Story.

SnoozeShade is made from air-permeable mesh fabric — which means air can flow freely through it, while still providing protection from 99% of UV rays. That’s very different from using a blanket, muslin, or towel.

Why do these scare stories keep resurfacing?

The problem usually comes from photos or videos where someone has placed a thick blanket over a pram, which blocks airflow and can cause dangerous overheating. But SnoozeShade isn’t a blanket. It’s a scientifically tested mesh fabric designed to protect babies safely.

🔬 We tested it ourselves:
In a recent 24-hour in-house test, we placed a stroller fitted with SnoozeShade inside a sealed garden office — no airflow, glass and metal walls, the worst possible environment.

The results? The air temperature inside the pram stayed virtually identical to the room temperature. No trapped heat. No “greenhouse effect.” Just consistent airflow and protection. SnoozeShade’s mesh design really works.

Sun safety comes first

The most important thing you can do for your baby on a warm day is keep them shaded and hydrated. Doctors around the world recommend no direct sun exposure for babies under 6 months.

Tips for keeping your baby cool

  • Stick to the shade — or create your own using a fully air-permeable shade like SnoozeShade
  • Offer feeds more frequently to prevent dehydration
  • Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day (usually midday–3pm)
  • Dress baby in light, breathable layers and use sunscreen (if over 6 months)
  • Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses for older babies

Always check your baby

Even with the best sun shade, it’s important to regularly check on your baby. When they’re sleeping, it’s easy to get caught up in errands — just make a habit of looking in every so often to check they’re comfortable and happy.

And remember, if it’s extremely hot, heading inside may be the safest option of all.
